Knowing some about the ex-Soviet immigrants, many of them had certainly not lost their anti-Jewish mindset that the Soviet enterprise at times encouraged. As of now, they can channel those feelings against the Palestinian population. Why else are there so many ex-Soviets in the Border Guard? Another aspect here is the present Israeli flirt with European nationalist parties, such as France's Marine Le Pen. Slavoj Zizek made the point that these policies are taking Israel on its way to anti-Semitic Zionism, which is a valid point and deserves further exploration. In a way rather poetic -- the Frankenstein you yourself created will desgtroy you in the end.kassandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13553548124263084987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675600882597316438.post-78196668070990888052012-01-12T09:03:19.433-08:002012-01-12T09:03:19.433-08:00You are of course aware that when migration from t...You are of course aware that when migration from the Soviet Union was in full swing, all that was needed was ONE Jewish grandparent to immigrate. (I don't know if this is still the case.) Needless to say, there was quite a market in Jewish grandparents -- documentation could be bought. I know one couple where the husband had a Jewish grandparent, the wife had none. The husband died. The wife then arranged the immigration of her first husband to Israel, who had no Jewish connections. They are both full-fledged citizens of Israel.
No wonder there are so many nut jobs there, as detailed in the previous story re the Russians in action.kassandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13553548124263084987noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7675600882597316438.post-11519951749171533192012-01-12T00:51:32.563-08:002012-01-12T00:51:32.563-08:00Well said.
I remember a conversation several years...Well said.
I remember a conversation several years back with a "pro-Israel" professor in the Bay Area. If I remember correctly, he was fuming about the fact that Norman Finklestein - "that certifiable nut-job" - had been invited to speak at some university forum later that semester.
Regardless, we were talking about the situation in Israel, and what I distinctly recall is his reaction as I told him about the 443 road and how it is in effect a Jewish-only road. He simply would not believe me. Looking at me quizzically, he asked if I was not perhaps distorting the facts, or pulling his leg. Surely, this kind of thing can't happen in Israel - which in his mind is a kind of a hawkish but essentially liberal society (i.e., something molded along his and his milieu's ideological lines). I offered that he check up on 443. We never spoke of it again.
Keep doing what you are doing.Nir Ehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13920465963229095248noreply@blogger.com
